The Canadian city of St. Catharines is located near the Great Lakes and the noisy rumbling Niagara Falls. Now there is deep snow, but Canadians and guests of the city do not suffer from the cold: they savor the icy, but soul-warming wine. In January, St. Catharines hosts one of the most memorable events of the year - the Niagara Ice Wine Festival.
"Ice wine", or Icewine - the product itself is very interesting. It is made from white Riesling or Vidal grapes, frozen at night right on the vine. In the morning, sweet berries, strewn with crystals of snow and rime, are harvested, and a unique wine is prepared from them. The production process is complex and time consuming. Only one glass of wine is made from 13-15 kilograms of grapes! But this is not the main reason for its value, but the original rich taste. Icewine is served chilled - at a temperature of 10-12 ° C.
This wine was brought to Canada by the German immigrant Walter Heinle in 1973 (although Icewine existed even under the Romans, it was in Germany that the technology of its production was revived in the 18th century). Then he could not imagine that with his light hand it would become a real symbol of Canada, almost along with hockey and maple leaves. Now this country is the main producer of Icewine in the world.
And, of course, the Ice Wine Festival is especially appropriate right now, in the cold and harsh time of winter. The organizers deliberately play with the effects of frost and snow - and at the same time the warm color of Icewine. Ice and glass sculptures, which are very easy to confuse, are scattered everywhere, and wine falls rush in crystal fountains. Of course, sculptural creativity here does not reach such a scale as at the Kiruna Snow Festival, but it still brings originality to the holiday.
At this time, connoisseurs and connoisseurs of good wine gather in Canada - and prudently take their skis with them, because in addition to the Niagara Ice Wine Festival, these places are famous for their ski resorts. The main thing is not to overdo it with wine before putting on skis;-)
