Korean Jean shin She is well known both at home and abroad for her conceptual installations of everyday objects. Anything can become a material for creativity: lottery tickets, sports trophies, clothing items … One of the most interesting works of the author is a work Chemical Balance, which is both an original lamp and a creative installation.
At the heart of Chemical Balance is the myriad of empty medicine bottles that Jean Shin has collected from nursing homes, pharmacies, and private medical offices. From these containers, the author "built" turrets of various heights, which she connected together in structures resembling stalactites and stalagmites - striving from floor to ceiling and, conversely, hanging down. The light sources hidden inside give the piece a special charm, filling the installation with a bright orange glow.
“Chemical Balance” is about our culture of drug overuse and our bodies' dependence on various drugs. The installation looks like a group portrait of society, indicating the addiction of its members to the consumption of chemicals. The illuminated structures emit a rich orange glow, hinting that health issues actually go far beyond medical examination and prescriptions,”Jean Shin explains.
Jean Shin was born in Seoul, South Korea and currently lives and works in New York. She regularly takes part in national and international exhibitions. The installation "Chemical Balance" was created by the author twice: in 2005 for the Art Museum of the University of Albany (New York) and in 2009 for the Smithsonian Museum of American Art (Washington).
