Imagine a room where cakes and cakes replace everything - wallpaper on the walls, a chandelier, furniture. This is "Cakeland" - "Cake Land" by American author Scott Hove. However, this work only at first glance seems to be a real dream for those with a sweet tooth. First, sharp fangs and horns hide among the pink cream and whipped cream, scaring away those who want to taste the sweet masterpiece. And secondly - and this is the biggest disappointment - Scott's pastries are made from absolutely inedible materials, including wood and cardboard.
Although both the fangs and the choice of materials seem rather strange, the author himself provides comprehensive explanations for each of these points. “The sculptures look like the finest cakes, but they will never be eaten,” says Scott. - The nature of edible cakes is very fleeting, they live only until the end of the holiday in honor of which they were made. My cakes will exist as long as the author or society has the means to preserve them."
And here is how Scott Howe explains the presence of frightening elements in the "Land of Cakes": "As an island of beauty," Cakeland "needs its own protection, because the reality is that people are constantly trying to take possession of beauty and perfection. My sculptures seduce and beckon the viewer, showing beauty and being a source of potential satisfaction. But gradually the viewer notices that "Cakeland" has protective elements, and this causes irritation and a feeling of fear. And this, in turn, is very similar to the everyday scenario of our life: we hunt for satisfaction and are afraid that we will not get it. " In addition, Scott believes that his installation perfectly illustrates the search for temporary love: this process can be incredibly enjoyable, but at the same time it does not exclude insecurity and the manifestation of cruelty.
Scott Hove lives and works in Oakland (USA). He calls himself a self-taught artist and works in various genres, including sculptural installations and painting. In his works, the author seeks to reflect the dramatic relationship between the natural world and mechanical civilization.
