Recently, an amazing sculpture appeared in the California city of Santa Rosa: made in the form of an Egyptian obelisk, it consists entirely of old bicycles. And if in ancient Egypt stone obelisks glorified the god Ra and the pharaohs, then in the modern world this structure is a kind of call for an ecological lifestyle.
The sculpture, named "Cyclisk", was installed at the initiative of the city authorities, as well as the official Nissan representative in Santa Rosa. In the city there is a tax "1% on art": it is levied on all commercial projects whose value exceeds $ 500,000. creation of an unusual obelisk. The sculpture, almost 20 meters high and weighing about 4.5 tons, took 340 old bicycles to construct, donated by local non-profit cyclists' communities.
“We wanted a real landmark to appear in the city,” say the authors of the project, sculptors Mark Grieve and Ilana Spector. “When we saw the site of the future sculpture, it seemed to us that on this small piece of land in Santa Rosa there should be something high.” According to the authors, their decision to partner with cyclist communities turned out to be mutually beneficial: the old parts of someone's favorite bicycles did not go to the landfill, and the city received a new sculpture.
