Last Friday, September 24, an extremely controversial monument, depicting a raised middle finger, appeared in one of Milan's squares. Its author Mariurio Cattelan (Maurizio Cattelan), one of the most provocative sculptors of our time, called his work "L. O. V. E."
A 4-meter-high marble sculpture (and all 11 with the pedestal) was installed on the Affari Square opposite the building of the Italian Stock Exchange. Initially, the author planned to name it "Omnia munda mundis", which in Latin means "For the pure, everything is clean", but in the process of working on the monument, Cattelan changed the name. "Officially, the sculpture is called" L. O. V. E. " - therefore, it is established in the name of love. But between the lines, everyone can read and see their own meaning,”says the author. And this is pure provocation, because in most countries, a raised middle hand is considered an offensive gesture.
According to Cattelan, his sculpture ridicules all existing "isms" and opposes "ideology." Also, the monument represents a semantic cycle of loss of power by some leaders and its seizure by others. It would be very strange if the authorities of Milan liked such a sculpture. And she, of course, did not like it. Although we must pay tribute to the city administration - Cattelan's creation did not disappear from the square on the very first day: "We want to confirm our title of the capital of contemporary art, so we must not only act as intermediaries, but also accept what we do not like at all." At the same time, there can be no question of the scandalous work remaining in the city forever: the monument will stand in its place for only ten days, during Milan Fashion Week.
Maurizio Cattelan (1960) is an Italian author known for his satirical sculptures, including the Pope, upon whom a meteorite fell, and the praying Hitler on his knees.
