You can look at three things for an infinitely long time: water, fire and … unusual waterfall with an eloquent name "Eternal flame" … This is one of the natural phenomena when two seemingly opposite elements coexist in harmony at once. The waterfall is located in New York's Chestnut Ridge Park: natural gas is burning in a niche behind the falling water, which seeps through the rocks. Of course, gas is not supplied regularly, so travelers passing by often rekindle the extinguished light.
Chestnut Ridge Park is a great place for families. Many Americans come here in summer for scenic hiking trails, bike paths, several tennis courts, playgrounds and cozy picnic campsites. The Eternal Flame is one of the natural attractions of Chestnut Ridge, but a unique waterfall is located on the outskirts of the park, and few people find a path to it.
True, only one nuance spoils the impression of the waterfall: due to the high content of natural gas, the water has an unpleasant smell of rotten eggs. One of the cracks in the rock, through which the gas flows to the surface, is located just behind the waterfall. There is no wind in the grotto, so the lit gas burns for a long time.
The Eternal Flame waterfall is the most full-flowing in the spring when the snow is melting, as well as in the fall, when there are heavy rains. Travelers can observe a picturesque picture: a stream of water falls from a height of 9 m, reflecting, like a crystal lampshade, the light of a flame. You can see this natural phenomenon in the photographs posted on the website.
By the way, the tradition of lighting the Eternal Flame, symbolizing the memory of an outstanding personality or significant event, is quite old. The oldest Eternal Flame is considered to be the memorial to the Unknown Soldier in the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, it has been burning since 1921. It seems that the Eternal Flame of New York Falls is also a kind of sign that there are no less natural wonders on our planet than man-made ones.
