It is impossible to have unambiguous feelings in relation to the paintings of the Canadian artist Heidi Taillefer: her works cause horror, sometimes even disgust, but at the same time completely capture the viewer, and he can no longer tear himself away from a close study of their smallest details …
As stated on the artist's official website, “Heidi Taillefer's paintings are an original creative fusion of classical painting, surrealism, modern realism and mythology, combining popular metaphorical traditions from the times of Victorian romanticism to modern science fiction. Her works are in tune with the works of surrealists of the early 20th century, such as Max Ernst and Giorgio de Chirico."
Heidi Taillefer's paintings are fantastic ensembles of human and animal body parts, springs, light bulbs, antique clock mechanisms … The artist herself finds technical progress "exciting" and claims that humanity "is on the verge of an inevitable merger with technology." But at the same time, in her works, there is some kind of duality and ambiguity, and not sheer delight.
In her paintings, the artist tries to combine the primitive human essence and the rapid expansion of technology as a new paradigm that already looms on the horizon and promises to revise the content of what it means to be human. At the same time, Heidi Taillefer claims that her work does not carry any message - at least, she did not create them in that quality. The artist's paintings are an image of her own life experience, her thoughts and feelings. And the fact that someone sees in them social, political or moral messages is just a case of a happy coincidence and nothing more.
Heidi Taillefer was born in Montreal, Canada and started painting at the age of three. After graduating from McGill University, she became a fairly well-known artist, whose exhibitions are regularly held in the United States.
