It is very difficult to find craftsmen who would be able to perform professional wood engraving: the work is too complicated and requires maximum concentration and perseverance. Artists Paul Roden and Valerie Lueth from the Pittsburgh art studio Tugboat printshop - recognized professionals in working with wood, who have been delighting us with their original works for several years.

We have already written about their exclusive handmade prints on the website Kulturologiya. Ru. Readers will surely remember the work of The Moon, in which the artists reproduced the "portrait" of the moon in great detail. The new work of a talented art duo is titled The moth … Yes, yes, the artists decided to create an image of an ordinary moth, however, to call the finished woodcut (print on paper from a wooden printing plate) “ordinary” simply does not turn their language, because a sophisticated image looks simply luxurious.

As with the rest of their work, the artists began by painting a moth on a wooden mold. For this work, birch wood was chosen, since it is soft enough and allows you to create a bas-relief with the help of special hand tools. The next thing is small - to make a two-color print from the finished image on wood.

At first glance, it is strange that the artists decided to create a woodcut of an unremarkable gray moth, and not a chic butterfly. Paul Roden and Valerie Lueth explain that for them a moth is not only a moth, it is an ambivalent symbol that combines hope and a thirst for new sensations (just remember the moths flying into the flame in pursuit of a dream). This is a tiny organism, one of the "building blocks" of a huge world, a miracle, the beauty of which was revealed to the artists of the art studio Tugboat Printshop.
