“La Dolce Vita” is an expression that became winged after the release of the legendary film by Federico Fellini. We are accustomed to perceiving secular life through the prism of brilliance, chic and luxury. Artist Cristian Ramos from Florida decided that the memory of the kings of the pop scene and the queens of cinema should also be sweet, so he created a series of "star" portraits … made of sweets!
In the English language there is an idiom “eye candy” (literally - “candy eye”), meaning a person who is nice, sweet, attractive and pleasant to the eye. It seems that Christian Ramos took this phrase literally - the images of celebrities in unusual portraits are really recreated from sweets. For the images of Merlin Monroe, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Justin Bieber and Elvis Presley, the artist needed more than five thousand goodies (for each of the paintings). The mosaic portraits are laid out with Gummy Bears jelly candies, colorful M & M's balls, chewing gum, and peppermint candies.
The idea to use such an unusual material in his work came to Christian four years ago. During an ordinary walk in the park, he saw that the father was comforting his injured son with candy, then the artist understood a simple truth: sweets help to forget about pain, cause a smile and bring joy. Soon he was already composing the first sweet mosaics, honing his skills.
The first work of Christian Ramos was a life-size motorcycle model, collected from 20 thousand sweets. Gradually he moved on to creating portraits. Images of stars are popular with connoisseurs of contemporary art; the master sells some of the paintings for up to 18 thousand dollars (depending on the size of the image). Most of all in this work, the artist is attracted by the opportunity to experiment with new material, which allows him to create unusual and tasty masterpieces!
By the way, candy is not the only alternative to canvas and paints. On our website Kulturologiya.ru, we have previously written about unusual portraits made from hundreds of nails, as well as canvases made of multi-colored grains.
