There is swan loyalty and swan song, swan neck and swan lake. A British artist Ian Davie to this list he also added swan painting. The artist paints very beautiful, but completely ordinary paintings depicting birds and butterflies, fish and animals, flowers and trees … Only he does it not on paper, fabric or glass, but on snow-white swan featherscollected every year during the molt of these graceful, majestic birds. We have already written about the paintings painted on the feathers of birds, however, it was about the work of the artist Julia Thompson … However, given the similarity of ideas and materials, " swan painting"It looks completely different. Ian Davey is very lucky: next to his house there is a pond and nursery for royal swans, where the artist spends a lot of time collecting feathers dropped by birds, which he then puts into work. materials "to make them suitable for drawing. Usually the artist has sketches and even sketches of the paintings that he plans to transfer from paper to feathers, but sometimes he draws impromptu - so much inspired by his walks by the pond with swans.
So, Ian Davey's favorite trick is "large-format" pictures, which are stretched over several feathers. They look much more advantageous than the "usual" vertical works, and it is more interesting to draw them. For drawing on feathers, the author uses special water-based acrylic paints that do not damage the feathers, dry quickly and adhere well to the surface of the pen. This is probably due to the experience gained by Ian Davey over the years as a taxidermist. Believe it or not, the 45-year-old artist has only been painting for the last 5 years. Before that, the master admits, he never once took a brush and paints in his hands. But then, it happened … Ian Davey spied a way to paint feathers in New Zealand, where he went to rest on one of his vacations. There he was lucky to get acquainted not only with the art of the Maori people, but also with his future wife Tracy.
For this painstaking occupation, collecting, straightening, processing and painting swan feathers, Ian Davey spent four years honing his skills. Starting with an ordinary canvas, and soon moving to "pen" drawing, the artist became so skilled that his "swan painting" could be a suitable gift for the queen herself.
