Beautiful, enchanting Venice … This city is invariably associated with each of us with canals, gondolas and, of course, the carnival. It was the last event that inspired the artist Alex Levin to create a series of paintings, where the main element is a kind of symbol of the city on the water - a carnival mask.
“Venice itself is a city in a mask, and it is through the mask that this enchanted city looks at the whole world around it,” says Alex Levin, who called his series of paintings “Venice through the mask's eyes”. Indeed, the old city looks at us through ornate masks, and the most recognizable corners of Venice are visible in the eye-slits.
The author paints his paintings in the technique of the 16th century, using tempera and oil paints for work. In Alex's paintings, two genres are combined - landscape and figurative painting, but this in no way leads to a deterioration in the quality or expressiveness of his works.
The artist's works very accurately convey the mood of Venice. Gondoliers and their passengers, lacy palazzo, ripples on the surface of canals and rays of the setting sun on the roofs of houses … Now, to see all this, you don't have to go to Italy. It is enough just to look through the slits of the mask and plunge into the captivating atmosphere of this unique city. And the masks themselves are worth paying special attention to and considering along with the sights of Venice - adorned with rich fabrics, feathers and jewelry, they personify the sensuality and intrigue of the carnival.
Alex Levin was born in 1975 in Kiev (Ukraine), where he graduated with honors from the Academy of Arts. In 1990, the artist emigrated to Israel. Alex is currently working on two projects: a series of paintings about Venice ("Venice through the mask's eyes") and about the traditional Jewish heritage ("Tradition of Jewish Heritage").
