Although the main popularity of pin-up images came in the middle of the last century, playful cover girls have not lost their relevance today. At least for the Dutch artist Handiedan, who gives them a central place in her collages. The basis for the work can be very different - old music sheets, envelopes or even wooden doors - but the result will be amazing anyway.
Handiedan is the pseudonym for the Amsterdam-based artist whose real name is Hanneke Treffers. She uses classic images of pin-up girls for collages (that is, girls from posters and magazine covers made in a certain style - pin-up girls), as well as other elements - yellowed sheet music, stamps, old coins, old wood, rusty metal and other antiques that the artist picks up on the street, buys at flea markets or finds in attics. Deliberately complementing old images with frivolous curlicues, scribbles and dashes, Handiedan seems to break the clearly planned structure of the elements and thus enliven the design.
Handiedan names ordinary ink and ballpoint pens as his favorite tools. "When you work with them, you have no way of correcting any line later, so the results look very expressive, impulsive and outspoken."
Handiedan draws inspiration from the works of Picasso, Michelangelo, Dali, as well as from the works of French artists. She also confesses her boundless love of travel and says that big cities - Paris, Berlin, Shanghai - have a very big influence on her work.
Handiedan's works are exhibited at both individual and group exhibitions around the world - in Brussels, Amsterdam, San Francisco, London … The girl shows herself not only as a talented artist, but also a web designer, photographer, illustrator and flash animator.
