Drawings by Beatriz Milhazes are attractive and enchanting. Like a rare tropical plant, they are both delightful and misleading, full of cunning tricks and joy. Bright and colorful, they contain the scent of Brazil itself, recalling its merry carnivals.
Born in 1961 in Rio de Janeiro, Beatriz has been creating complex and rich sets of images, shapes and colors in her work for over 20 years. Many of her drawings are born in a small studio of the artist, located next to the luxurious botanical garden. Perhaps it is here that Beatriz Miljazes draws inspiration, embodying in her works the forms and patterns of flowers, delicate curls and outlines of leaves, bright tropical colors of exotic plants …
Although the fragrant blooming garden is not the only place that makes the artist want to create. In addition to natural forms, Beatriz Miliazes also takes advantage of the "urban atmosphere", consisting of a complex urban mix of colored Brazilian buildings, embroidery, jewelry and folk art. The architectural work of Roberto Burle Marx, a landscape architect and garden designer, is of great importance to the artist. Among her favorite artists, Beatriz names the names of Albert Eckhout, Henri Matisse and Bridget Riley.
Beatriz usually works on several paintings at the same time. Initially, she has ideas for colors and images, but "nothing is known until the very end." Although this statement suggests a lack of order, the artist claims that she is very disciplined and adheres to a rigid routine. And in the end, a drawing is obtained in which the skillful and precise hand of the master is felt.
The artist gained worldwide fame in the 1990s. You can see more of her work on the website.
