In the wardrobe, every woman must have at least one dress, because this particular piece of clothing makes a woman more seductive, feminine and sophisticated. However, dresses are just beautiful shapeless clothes until they are worn by a person. The artist Karen LaMonte decided to correct this injustice and created dresses from glass, repeating the shape of the female body.
Why dresses? “Well, what else? Karen asks a counter question. "I'm a girl, and it's only natural that I think about dresses." Karen creates her sculptures using an elaborate technology, which consists in the use of two templates - one of them is removed from the female body and represents the internal forms of the sculpture, the second is removed from clothing and, accordingly, is necessary for the outer part of the ice dress. Both of these samples are combined by the artist into one whole.
Interestingly, Karen herself does not consider her work to be unusual or extraordinary. She says that at first she was very interested in the possibility of converting fabric into glass. The artist worked with puppets and decided to try to dress them in glass clothes. To begin with, Karen made several small glass models, but they looked too doll-like. Therefore, she decided to create larger glass dresses - life-size.
In her sculptures, Karen Lamont always explores the female body: under glass and through glass, through translucent folds and draperies of clothing. Glass is an excellent material for sculpture, because unlike the same marble or bronze, it opens the fourth dimension - it makes it possible to see the sculpture not only from the outside, but also from the inside.
Karen Lamont is from New York, but has been living and working in the Czech Republic for the past few years. You can get acquainted with the artist's work in more detail on the website
