At any mention of high society receptions, the imagination immediately draws ladies in chic toilets, refined conversations and, of course, balls. Waltzes, polonaises, mazurkas were popular in different eras. We have collected the most majestic and graceful dances performed at balls.
Viennese waltz
The first mentions of waltz belong to the 12-13 centuries. Then in Bavaria (Germany) Nachtanz was popular - the ancestor of the modern waltz. In addition, the German word "walzen" means "to revolve". According to another version, the three-fourths Volta dance was invented in France by peasants from Provence in the 16th century. The peak of the waltz's popularity falls on the 19th century, when everyone in Vienna admired Strauss's music. It was then that the dance received the name Viennese. The waltz gradually ceases to be peasant and becomes a favorite of the aristocracy. Now it is performed not bouncing, but gracefully and smoothly gliding on the parquet.
Polonaise
Polonaise is a dance full of dignity and admiration of gentlemen before the ladies. It is believed to have originated in Poland in the 16th century. Deprived of any difficult steps and quick turns, the polonaise was more intended to show the arrogance of those performing it. As a rule, the first pair set the movements, and then all the others joined them. The performance of the polonaise could go outside the hall, the procession continued through the garden, and then solemnly returned to the palace.
Minuet
The majestic minuet was called "the king of dances and the dance of kings". He gained popularity at the court of Louis XIV. Because of the fashion for everything French, the minuet also moved to the palaces of the Russian autocrats. Starting from the era and up to the 30s of the 19th century, this dance did not lose its popularity among the Russian aristocracy.
Mazurka dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The olyaks-mazurs are considered its ancestors. The composer Frederic Chopin had a hand in popularizing this dance. He wrote over 60 mazurkas. Gradually, like many other dances, the mazurka moved from folk to the category of secular dances.
Any dance performed at balls, or on city streets, pleases the eye and excites the mind. So the history of tango holds many secrets. It was first performed in port dens and taverns by European emigrants, learning movements from local pimps, and it often happened that both partners in a pair turned out to be men.
