For the Walking Shadows project, American illustrator and graphic designer Jason Ratliff transforms the shadows of people, animals and objects into vibrant patterns reminiscent of stained glass or mosaic silhouettes.

In the Walking Shadows series, the illustrator clearly demonstrates that if you add a little imagination, you can create something visually more interesting out of dark shadows. Elderly people, musicians and animals are shown in the most common everyday situations, however, accompanied by shadows consisting of solid color blocks of bright colors, similar to stained glass or mosaic panels.

“I create fantasy illustrations using a mixture of acrylics and inks and try a wide variety of surfaces,” says the artist. To draw attention to the main objects, Ratliff deliberately removed all unnecessary, in his opinion, details, making the background plain and light.

Ratliff lives and works in Indianapolis, USA. The artist graduated from Purdue University with a degree in visual communication and design.

Jason is currently working as a freelance designer. Ratliff's drawings fit perfectly with modern ideas about commercial illustration. So, his work can be seen in the form of bright prints on T-shirts, lids, cases for smartphones or baseball caps.

Polish photographer Jan Kriwol also decided to play with the shadow theme in one of her photography projects. Unlike Jason Ratliff's colored shadows, however, Kriwol's shadows glow.
