Jonathan Puckey is not one of those people who are used to being content with established rules. He is more likely one of those who come up with these rules himself: even if not in life in general, but certainly in his work.
Jonathan is a graphic designer based in Amsterdam. He always strived to create works based on an attempt to combine art and new technologies. And the author became famous thanks to a new style of drawing invented by him. The project, dubbed "delauney raster", is a digital image processing using a range of digital tools.
Using Scriptographer and Color Averaging, plugins for Adobe Illustrator developed by Jurg Lehni, Jonathan Pukey vectorized famous faces using the Delaunay triangulation method. It sounds pretty confusing, but there is no need to understand confusing terms to assess the end result. After digital processing, the author receives images created from many triangles of various shades and sizes.
“In 2005, I attended a lecture by Karel Martens,” says Jonathan Pukey. “He talked about how heavily his work depends on the constraints of printing technology. And then I felt a bit of a jealousy because my computer doesn't know what restrictions are. The ability to create whatever I want is a pretty heavy burden on my shoulders, because every idea can be implemented in a thousand different ways. Creation of the necessary tool solves some of the problems and allows you to focus on the creative process"
As you can see, for Jonathan Pukey, the main thing is the idea, and he realizes it in any case, even if for this he will have to invent another hundred new tools. More information about the author's projects, as well as videos on creating vector images, can be found on his official website.
