We are already accustomed to the fact that contemporary art sometimes takes on the most incredible forms, which often frightens an unprepared contemplator, or causes him a persistent feeling of disgust. In this case, they say that the person did not understand these works. I believe that people who first get acquainted with the work of the British artist Steve Bishop feel something similar.
Bishop is an unusual artist. By the way, it is not clear why they call him that, because he became famous not for painting or graphics, but for enchanting installations, for the creation of which he used fluorescent lamps, wires and … carcasses of animals turned into stuffed animals.
The installation "Staring cats" is Bishop's first project of its kind, literally back in 2007. And at that time, the figurines of cats were made by hand, not with the help of a taxidermist. The reaction to the work was mixed: some people applauded the author, admiring the originality of thinking, the unusual ideas and their presentation, while others spat in disgust when they heard about Steve Bishop, because they considered his installation a primitive and rough work, because the author did not even think about hide the wires with which the cats were connected to the mains.
But one way or another, following the "hypnocats", other masterpieces of the artist appeared: "Suspension of Disbelief" in the same 2007, and "Willingness for the Moment" in the next. In these works, stuffed animals were used - first a fox, and then a polar fox.
Frankly, I find it difficult to give any assessment to the work of Steve Bishop. I can only say one thing - these installations are truly inimitable, and only true experimenters and revolutionaries in everything that concerns their environment are able to appreciate what Steve Bishop is doing. By the way, on his website you can browse through the gallery with the rest of the works, among which there are no less original things.
