Believe it or not, there are people in the world who have never seen the real moon. The installation "Artificial Moon" was created by the Beijing artist Wang Yuyan especially for those who have not seen, but have always dreamed of seeing this beautiful luminous celestial body. The "artificial moon" is an abstraction of the real moon rarely seen in the Shanghai sky, where many brightly lit skyscrapers overshadow the natural glow of the Earth's satellite.
This giant glowing ball is made by Chinese craftsman Wang Yuyan from 1000 light bulbs and metal rods. According to the author's project, the installation "Artificial Moon" should hang among the trees in Xuhui Park, where any resident of Shanghai can take a closer look at its mysterious and enchanting beauty. The art object Wang Yuyan is a kind of game with contradictions between artificial and natural, real and surreal.
The gigantic structure with a diameter of 4 meters is now on display at the Sainsbury Center for the Visual Arts, Norwich, England, as part of an event called "China, China, China !!!" The "artificial moon" was shipped from China in eight different parts, took about a week to assemble and now hangs from the ceiling and illuminates every corner of the gallery. In addition to Wang Yuyan, the exhibition features works by 18 contemporary artists from China.
