Erwin Wurm is an Austrian artist whose central theme is the paradoxes of the world around us. For example, at a recently opened exhibition at the Beijing Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA), he presented an installation called Narrow House. In it, he ridicules the housing problem of the modern world.
After all, real estate nowadays is so expensive that ordinary people can afford to buy or even rent only the smallest apartments and houses. And with longing we recall the times when the average family could afford to buy a spacious two-story house. For example, the 1970s.
It was in the style of the 70s of the 20th century that Erwin Wurm created his "Narrow House". This two-story building looks like an ordinary family mansion in everything. It has a kitchen, a common room, several bedrooms, a bathroom, a toilet, a library, many windows and a vaulted roof. The interiors are made in the style of the same seventies. Yes, you can live here at all! Unless, of course, you are claustrophobic! Such houses will perfectly fit into the real estate of Orenburg, Lipetsk, Ufa or any other provincial Russian city.
After all, the "Narrow House" by Erwin Wurm is a little more than a meter wide! Thus, the artist makes fun of the shy living conditions in which billions of people are forced to live all over the Earth.
It is not surprising that stress is the main problem of modern Mankind. After all, as you know, nothing is more human than the housing issue.
