Most of the money to auction houses in 2012 was brought by the leader of pop art Andy Warhol. For 12 months, according to Bloomberg, his works were sold for $ 380, 3 million.
Thus, Warhol managed to oust Zhang Daqian from the first position, who in 2011 took the lead in Pablo Picasso. Last year, a painter from China brought auction houses more than $ 506 million, and at the end of 2012, with a result of 240 million, he was only in 4th place.
Currently, Picasso is in second position in the ART rating with a profit of $ 334.7 million. Last year, the legendary Spanish artist lost the title of the most expensive author at the auction. The new record was set by Edvard Munch. His painting "Scream" was sold for $ 119.9 million. In third place is the contemporary artist Gerhard Richter, who earned $ 298.9 million for auctions, which was 48% more than in 2011.
According to Bloomberg, all transactions that have ever been made with the works of Warhol, the total is estimated at $ 2.9 billion. At the same time, sales of works by Pablo Picasso reach $ 5 billion.
Andy Warhol was able to break into the lead also for the reason that in 2012 the foundation, which was created after the death of the artist, began to sell a collection of his works. Before the start of sales, the fund owned 4 thousand units of the artist's works. Bidding for Warhol's works will continue this year, with the first online auctions scheduled for February.
The art rating showed that the interest of Chinese art dealers and collectors in the works of compatriots in 2012 decreased significantly, which worsened the position in the rating of Chinese authors. Works by Western post-war and contemporary artists were in great demand on the world market. In November 2012, auctions Christie’s, Sotheby’s and Phillips de Pury, which were dedicated to post-war and contemporary art, brought a total of $ 1.1 billion. Christie’s and Sotheby’s auctions became the most profitable in history.
