A dog is not only a loyal friend to a person, but also a selfless helper. History knows many cases when four-legged ones showed real heroism. A photographer from Holland tells about the feat of the dogs that took part in the rescue operation after the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 in America Charlotte Dumas.
Charlotte Dumas, like many, cannot recall without a shudder that terrible day when the explosions thundered in America. Reading in the newspapers about the search and rescue operation, she looked in horror not only at the scale of the destruction, but also at the hundreds of dogs that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) used in the search for people who survived under the rubble of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Brave dogs worked day and night together with firefighters and rescuers, making their way through the rubble, looking for victims. Many people were saved thanks to the efforts of animals.
10 years later, on the eve of another anniversary, Charlotte Dumas went to the United States to find these fearless dogs. Having made a request to FEMA, she learned that out of hundreds of dogs, only 15 were still alive by that time. The photographer had come a long way to find the "retired" four-footed rescuers and capture them at home.
The collection of portraits is very touching. Life-hardened dogs who survived the horrors of the terrorist attack, although they are quite old, still look decent in the pictures. They are strong in spirit, as befits real heroes. Ten years ago, amid chaos and destruction, they gave hope for the salvation of hundreds of affected people, and today their images are associated with a spark of hope.
Charlotte Dumas comments on her photo project: “Ten years ago, all these animals were in one place at the same time and with one purpose - to work. This experience unites them to this day, for me this realization became an incentive to find and capture these dogs. Today they symbolize the vulnerability of old age, because their life, their era is coming to an end."
Unfortunately, the four-footed rescuers die one after another, every day there are fewer of them, fortunately, they are reminded of the touching photo cycle of Charlotte Dumas.
Recall that recently on the site Kulturologiya. RF we published material about the dogs who fought in Afghanistan. Their feat is also not forgotten by people.
