Chinese author Han Bing presents to our attention a series of photographs "Urban Amber", in which he raises questions of paradoxes of desires on the example of modern China.
Desire in the understanding of the author "has the strongest manifestations and effects, which can be both beautiful and poisonous." The skyscrapers depicted in many of the Urban Amber images are for many poor Chinese families the embodiment of their main desire: their own home and a wealthy life. All the photos seem to be shrouded in some kind of aura of magic and dreaminess … And all would be fine, but in reality the coveted skyscrapers are just reflections taken by Hyun Bing in polluted rivers flowing in the poor quarters of Beijing. Knowing this fact, all the seeming magic somehow disappears at once, leaving behind only a bitter irony.
The name "Urban Amber" can be translated as "Urban Amber". According to Heng Bing, dirty Chinese rivers, like amber, keep in themselves the "sediment of times" and, like in a mirror, reflect the fantasies of the poor about a better life in a modernized society.
Heng Bing was born in 1974 in a poor Chinese village. The author works in various genres - photo, video, multimedia installations, performances - but the main theme of his work is the problems of modernizing Chinese society.
