During the auction, the auction house Christie's sold a painting with the title "Portrait of the Artist". It features a pool and a couple of figures, and was created by David Hockney, a contemporary photographer, graphic artist and artist from England. This work was sold at a price of $ 90, 3 million, which is a record price for works of contemporaries.

Experts have estimated the painting of a contemporary artist at 80 thousand dollars. The proceeds were slightly larger. David Hockney wrote the work "Portrait of the Artist" in 1972. This canvas was created, the size of which is 213, 5x305 centimeters, especially for the exhibition, which was held in New York. It took two weeks to create this canvas, despite the fact that every day the artist spent 18 hours at work. After the New York exhibition, the painting was shown at the Tate Modern Museum in London and the Pompidou Center in Paris.

Before the work went to the auction, which took place on November 15, 2018, this painting was exhibited in Los Angeles, Hong Kong, London. Alex Rotter, who at the auction house holds the post of chairman of the department of post-war and contemporary art, noted that not so much time will pass, only 10 or 20 years, and the cost of this painting will increase significantly.

The last auction set a record for the price of works by contemporary artists. Formerly the most expensive work of a contemporary author, it sold for $ 58 million. This record was set at the auction in 2013. That's how much they paid for the stainless steel sculpture of the Balloon Dog by Jeff Koons. The most expensive painting in history, which was sold through an auction, was Leonardo da Vinci's "Savior of the World", created in 1499. It was sold last year through an auction by Dmitry Rybolovlev, a Russian billionaire, for $ 450.3 million.

Officially, the name of the one who put up the painting "Portrait of the Artist" is not named. A well-known newspaper The New York Times says it could be Joe Lewis, a British collector now living in the Bahamas. It was also decided not to name the name of the buyer of the canvas.
