When the sky is exploded with flashes of broken lines of lightning, there is something to see and admire. The sparkling discharges in the gloomy stormy sky look mesmerizing and very picturesque, especially since they sometimes resemble spreading tree crowns, or a river bed with numerous tributaries. And sometimes it seems that the sky is covered with dark purple glass, and lightning is cracks through which you can see the bright light hidden behind this dense screen. An interesting art project is dedicated to electric discharges " 15.000 Volts"American student Melanie Hoff, who decided to play with lightning bolts, electrodes and a large piece of plywood. The student fixed two electrodes with a capacity of 15,000 volts, declared in the name of the project, on a wooden panel. And then she watched how "trees" born of electric current appeared and grew on it. Growing up at different points of the plywood sheet, the trees gradually turned into stream beds, merged into one whole, forming intricate patterns and complex shapes with broken outlines, the shape of which cannot be predicted in advance. The effect of chance, surprise plays one of the main roles in this original art project. Nature and chance decide how man-made zippers and their woodprints look like.
The process of emergence and growth of electric trees, and in some way their shape, depends solely on the variety and quality of the panel, which will subsequently be decorated with lightning prints. According to the author of the project, the fibers of the plywood, as well as the glue that was used to form this panel, significantly affect the nature and direction of the "flow" of the marks left by lightning. It happens very slowly and smoothly, as if reluctantly, which adds to the charm of the process. Apparently, the contemplation of how a sheet of plywood is cut through by lightning electrical discharges will be included in the list of those things that can be watched forever.
By the way, Melanie Hoff made an amazing video about her experiment. In this report, you can see with your own eyes how everything that we see in the sky during a thunderstorm is formed, and consider it in detail and in detail. Details are on Melanie Hoff's website.
