In the age of fantastic discoveries and high technologies, people often lack simplicity of feelings and sincerity in relationships. Friendship, self-sacrifice, love - this is so little in everyday life, but in abundance in the fairy-tale world. Perhaps one of the brightest stories is the tale of H. K. Andersen about Kai and Gerd. Surprisingly, in Austria there is a place where everyone can find themselves literally in the palaces of the Snow Queen. It - largest ice cave Eisriesenwelt, which stretches over 42 km.
The name of the cave is translated from German as "the world of ice giants", it is located in Werfen, 40 km from Salzburg. More than 100 million years ago, the process of erosion of limestone mountains began; today tourists can observe a picturesque cave. Ice blocks on its walls are formed as a result of temperature differences: in the spring, streams formed by melting snow flow down into the cave, and immediately freeze, forming bizarre ice pictures!
Despite the considerable length of the cave, the walls are covered with ice only along the first kilometer, where, in fact, numerous tourists come on excursions all year round. In winter, the cold wind "from the street" contributes to the icing of the limestone walls of the cave, and in summer the wind blows from the cave, preventing this splendor from melting!
For a long time nothing was known about Eisriesenwelt. The locals spoke of her with apprehension, believing that she was the gateway to Hell. Only in 1879, the natural scientist from Salzburg, Anton Posselt, visited the cave for the first time. Later, the search for the Austrian was continued by his fellow countryman, speleologist Alexander von Mörk. After his expedition in 1912, interest in the cave did not fade away. In 1920, the first enclosed cabins were built for the descent of explorers to the "ice kingdom", and the first tourist routes were laid. Currently, The Eisriesenwelt is visited by about 200,000 travelers annually!
However, not only in Austria there are amazing caves, in Russia a visit to the largest underwater gypsum cave in the world can become a real discovery for all lovers of extreme recreation! Here is a real paradise not only for cavers, but also for divers!
