Flying cities. So far, this phrase is perceived by us as something from the realm of fantasy. But who knows, suddenly one day the Earth's surface will become uninhabitable? Or will the population increase so much that our planet simply cannot accommodate everyone? Or, finally, will technological progress reach the point where flying cities will be as commonplace as, for example, skyscrapers are now? Let's see how contemporary artists are developing this idea.

Japanese author Masakatsu Sashi (Masakatsu Sashie) is sure that if people do not change their attitude to the environment, then our civilization will soon come to an end. The pessimist artist dedicated a series of paintings to this idea, where life moves to small spherical planets, indifferently floating in the sky above the remnants of former power.

Another Japanese, director Hayao Miyazaki (Hayao Miyazaki), directed the full-length anime "Laputa Heavenly Castle", which is set on the legendary flying island. Interestingly, the author borrowed the name Laputa from Jonathan Swift, who wrote about the flying island in Gulliver's Adventures.

For the artist John Burkee (John Berkey) once had to work on the design of the universe in Star Wars. And in his free time, he continued to create either fantastic spaceships, or cities of a new generation, such as this one, in the form of a huge fish.

Company Rael San Fratello she does not speak about flying cities yet, but she already has a project of flying gardens. These green islands should float in the air and improve the ecology of megacities.

Soaring mountains from the sensational Avatar by James Cameron (James Cameron) - these are also not quite cities, but it is simply impossible not to mention them. An interesting fact: when creating the landscape of Pandora, the landscapes of the Chinese mountain Jiankunzhu were taken as a basis. After the release of the film, the Chinese authorities decided to rename this mountain "Hallelujah, Avatar."

And here is the animation studio Pixar presented in the cartoon "Up" (Up) a variant of a flying house that rises into the air thanks to many balloons. Incidentally, the filmmakers were not too lazy to calculate how many balls would actually be required to carry out such an adventure. The result is impressive: 105,854.

In a computer game "Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia" the action takes place on the flying continent Sol Ciel and the city of Platina floating next to it, which can be reached by rail.

The city of the artist soaring in the foggy sky Tolgahan gungor at first it seems like an ordinary settlement, reflected in the water. And only with a closer look can you see the tops of the mountains located far below and the outlines of real, "earthly" cities.

The artist also created something similar Alex Popescu (Alex Popescu). His flying city, half of which is upside down, can be seen in a video for one of the Romanian music groups.

Robert McCall (Robert McCall) created his paintings decades ago. Flying cities, bathed in the sun - according to the author, the 21st century is waiting for just such a future. Well, not a bad option, right?
