“Ballet is not a technique, it is a soul,” the great artist Anna Pavlova said about the dance. On the stage, a fascinating action always unfolds in front of the audience, but many so want to look behind the scenes, to see how the artists train and how they prepare for performances. Today we have a unique opportunity to see the "behind the scenes" of Russian ballet thanks to the photographs of the "photographer on pointe" - Daryan Volkova.
Daryan Volkova is an amazing person. Truly: a talented person is talented in everything. The girl comes from Khabarovsk, from childhood she was engaged in dancing, entered the Institute of Culture and at the age of 19 decided to conquer St. Petersburg. Her career in ballet was developing rapidly: having arrived in the northern capital, she was able to get into the troupe of the Hermitage Theater and soon she was already performing the part in Swan Lake. Over the past several years, impressive results have been achieved, today Daryan is touring the world as part of several "relocating" ballet companies and calls herself a "freelancer".
Another hobby of hers is photography. Her husband, a professional photographer, infected the girl with an interest in shooting. It was he who gave the first camera, helped with advice. Several years ago, Darian began to take the first pictures, over time she realized that she wanted to photograph ballet dancers, since she has a wonderful opportunity to visit the theater's sandpipers, to communicate with dancers. Ballet photography has become an absolutely independent hobby, to some extent this activity even helps to fight the fantastic fatigue, which, of course, rolls over during training and performances.
Daryan admits that the very opportunity to shoot in Russian theaters captivates her immensely. Somewhere it is easier to do it, somewhere it is more difficult, but when you manage to achieve your goal, the result exceeds all expectations.
In the photographs of Daryan Volkova, we can see professional dancers in the dressing rooms and during rehearsals, and photographer David Perkins created a photo cycle dedicated to how professional dancers behave at home … It turns out that they control their body even in moments of rest!
