Unfortunately, in recent years, printed books have become less and less popular - they are being replaced by electronic readers, which allow you to download hundreds and thousands of publications. On the other hand, the already printed volumes themselves are becoming the favorite material for the creative work of contemporary artists. For example, installations from books are made by a Spanish woman Alicia Martin … Her new work, book waterfall Biografias VI was presented this year in The Hague.
Contemporary artists have repeatedly emphasized in their work the most important role that books play in our lives. Examples of this statement include the work of Thomas Ehgartner or the Penguin artists. And the Spaniard Alicia Martin has been creating installations from her own series Biografias in different cities of the world for several years in a row.
Biografias is a conventional waterfall made of books that pours into the city street from the window of a building. For example, the Museum Meermanno in The Hague, where the events of the International Paper Biennale were held in the fall of 2012.
Moreover, as it is not difficult to guess from the name Biografias VI, this is already the sixth work of this kind from Alicia Martin. The previous five have been created in various cities in Spain over the past few years. The current installation is the first to overcome the boundaries of the artist's native country.
Book Falls Biografias VI was created from five thousand books collected by Alicia Martin in libraries and bookstores in the Netherlands, where they were written off and prepared for disposal. The artist gave them new life by transforming the printed word and visual art.
