Painter Steven Spazuk started his creative career like many other artists. First pencil sketches, then watercolor, oil and acrylic. This was followed by a passion for airbrushing, which fascinated the artist with smooth outlines of figures and soft gradients that could only be done with an airbrush … But over time, it seemed to him not enough. Then in 2001, Stephen Spazuk for the first time put aside paints, airbrushes and brushes, replacing them with … candle and fire … So it began " era of fire painting"." I have no control over anything, I just let the candle and its flame do its job. And then I see what happened. Usually these are abstract figures made of soot, in which, however, you can see the future picture. Looking at these figures, I suddenly can see in them an elbow, knee, chest or leg - so so be it ", - says Stephen Spazuk about the peculiarities of his work. But in our case, the author refines the resulting “blots.” And instead of them we see graceful monochrome portraits and other images.
Now, instead of brushes, he has in his arsenal needles and brushes with metal bristles. They help the artist to reveal small details, add light to the shadows - in general, make black spots of soot on cardboard plates with real paintings or details of one large painting, which consists of fragments. Such fragmented paintings in the artist's portfolio are huge portraits of famous personalities, on which he worked for more than one month.
You can look behind the screen of mystery, and see with your own eyes how pictures are born from fire and soot, in this video:
