Video: Paintings worth reading, not watching: the controversial work of Anselm Kiefer
2024 Author: Richard Flannagan | [email protected]. Last modified: 2023-12-15 23:55
In his difficult work, the artist (Anselm Kiefer) turns to history, including German, religion, mysticism, ancient poetry, Mesopotamian myths, kabbalism, alchemy, philosophy, images of memory and heritage. Not many people will like his works, because they do not have any tenderness as such, but they have that very magnetism and a certain severity that requires thought. The paintings he created resemble books that are read in one breath, and after a while you want to re-read them in order to suddenly notice what you did not notice the first time …
Despite many conflicting opinions and disputes in the modern world, Anselm is called one of the best monumentalists of post-war art, measuring his seemingly complex paintings in meters, sculptures in hundreds of kilograms, and their cost in millions of euros. But few people know about how it all started. The starting point was a series of photographic works called "Occupation" created back in 1969. Then the artist came up with a crazy idea to capture himself in the form of an officer of the Third Reich, for which, in fact, he was almost accused of sympathizing with Nazism. But such an unusual addiction can be explained quite simply. He was born in 1945, just a month before the end of the war, and everything that he saw around him was just solid ruins, which became a kind of source of inspiration for him. After all, according to the author, if there are ruins, then you can always start from scratch. And how he was right. Everything that was once a kind of his toys has now become material for paintings, books and sculptures. Using canvas, scraps of newspapers, sand, nails, wire, hair, oil, grass and other debris, scorched by fire and soaked in rain, he tirelessly applies in his work, creating truly exciting works in which one feels sadness, pain, longing, experiences, but at the same time faith, hope and possibly love are glowing …
It is also worth noting the fact that in the near future an exhibition will be held in the Hermitage, which will open on May 30, 2017 and will stay in the exhibition hall until September 3, so that everyone can personally enjoy the controversial masterpieces of the talented master.
Suren Harutyunyan's works -. The paintings he created evoke various associations, because the longer you look at them, the more you see something new every time …
