On the morning of August 22, 1957, the Soviet diesel submarine M-351 (project A 615) left Balaklava. Its captain Rostislav Belozerov had to perform a series of urgent diving exercises. During the next diving, something suddenly went wrong. The slamming of the air ducts leading to the engines did not close completely. 45 tons of seawater got inside, which flooded the engine compartment, a fire started.

Falling swiftly to the bottom of the sea, the boat plunged to a depth of 83 meters and got stuck in the ground, "hovering" at an angle of 61 degrees. After stopping the leak, work immediately began to rescue the vessel. An emergency buoy was released to the surface, and then buckets of water were passed along a chain through the entire vessel in order to pump it out and try to float. A whole day passed in exhausting work, and people began to freeze. Despite the end of summer, the temperature is not high at depth: only +7 degrees Celsius. In addition, there is less oxygen in the air. Its supply was enough for another three days.

When the M-351 did not get in touch with the headquarters, they began to look for it. The incident was reported to the Minister of Defense of the USSR, Marshal Georgy Zhukov. Threatening a military tribunal, he ordered that everything be done to save people and raise the boat. The commander-in-chief of the USSR Navy, Admiral Gorshkov, arrived at the scene of the accident.

The emergency buoy was found pretty quickly, and the rescue operation began a day later. On the second attempt, it was possible to attach hoses and fresh air was pumped onto the boat. A day later, we established a telephone connection. Through torpedo tubes, the divers transferred warm clothes, breathing apparatus, medicines, and food on board. All this time, the weather on the surface worsened, it was stormy.

Three days after the sinking, the boat was hooked with a cable, but it could not stand it and burst. But the sailors did not despair. The next day, August 26, with the help of three tugs, she was nevertheless pulled out of the silt, and at 2:30 the M-351 surfaced to the surface. After 84, 5 hours of underwater captivity, the sailors of the M-351 crew were rescued.

The crew of the M-351 submarine was lucky to escape, because she almost added to the sad list sunken ships that still excite the minds of treasure hunters.
