The legendary Coco Chanel possesses the idea that fashion passes, but style remains. It is easy to verify this by visiting Museum of bags and wallets, which is located in Amsterdam … Any fashionista who is fortunate enough to visit here will not remain indifferent at the sight of delightful accessories of all shapes, colors and sizes. In total, the museum has about 4,000 exhibits, and the Dutch are proud that this collection is the largest in the world.
The owner of a unique collection of bags, Hendrikje Ivo, can be called a “fashionista of our century”. It took her 35 years to equip the museum on her own. It all started with the purchase of an antique turtle shell wallet, which was produced in Germany in 1820, gradually there were more and more antique handbags. When there were about 3000 items in the collection (from the Middle Ages to the present), Hendrikje Ivo decided to show it to the public. Initially, her own two-story villa served as an exhibition hall, but since 2007 the museum has been housed in a 17th-century patriarchal building overlooking Amsterdam's most prestigious Herengracht Canal.
The oldest bags that can be found in the collection look extremely unremarkable: men and women wore them under their clothes in order to hide coins, keys and sewing kits in them. With the appearance of pockets on men's trousers, as well as with the rejection of fluffy women's skirts, such bags have disappeared from everyday life. They were replaced by ornate handbags, which were no longer hidden under the dress, but exquisitely complemented the outfit.
During the industrial revolution in the 18th century. the need arose for rail transport, for this they used large bags made of durable leather. In the 1950s, the first "branded" items appeared: Chanel quilted wallets and Hermès Kelly bags. The museum presents bags from Gucci, Chanel, Dolce and Gabbana, Vuitton, Alexander McQueen, Issey Miyake and Stella McCartney, which have not lost their relevance to this day.
In addition to the permanent historical exposition, the museum also hosts thematic exhibitions of contemporary masters. Young designers from all over the world, along with established gurus, can present their products to a wide audience. Truly a museum of bags and purses in Amsterdam - a real paradise for any woman!

Painted subway of Amsterdam. Art project Amsterdam Public Transport Company
The metro during rush hours is a dull and sometimes eerie sight.
