American sculptor Kris Kuksi is called a great experimenter, whose work will certainly cause a resonance, as well as a lot of different opinions and impressions. Some consider them to be stunning examples of modern steampunk, and with elements of fantastic surrealism, others are sure that all this chaotic jumble of details is very remotely reminiscent of steampunk, but there have never been and never will be those who will be indifferent. One of the most resonant is the series of sculptures Churchtanks … Churches perched on tanks - such an idea could only have occurred to such an inventor and non-conformist as Chris Cooksey. Moreover, this idea was not taken from scratch, because it was not a single fantasy. As you know, the church from time immemorial took part in armed conflicts, and more than one war broke out on the basis of religious and sectarian conflicts. Even today, these powerful weapons are used by those in power to achieve their goals, and in war all means are good. Therefore, the churches on the tanks - the very place.
Chris Cooksey's sculptures and installations are always in stunning detail, and the Churchtanks series is no exception. In the arrangement of the temples built in the Baroque style, the author carefully worked out every little detail, so that the barrel, threateningly hanging over the tank platform, looks natural and organic in each of the five sculptures. Tank churches can be viewed endlessly, each time finding one or another interesting detail, as well as pondering the thought that the author left to his audience. On which side is such an armed church fighting? Does she attack, or does she still defend? And what is the power of religion, destructive, or creative?
These and other works can be seen on the website of Kris Kuksi, a talented artist, designer and sculptor.
