Photos from National Geographic are like a small trip around the world every time, only in photos. In a few minutes, visit the reserves of Africa and New Zealand, wander along the (virtual) coast of the Pacific Ocean, and then climb to the very top of a half-extinct volcano, walk along the mountain ranges of the Alps and descend to the snows of Antarctica - this can only be dreamed of in a dream. Well, or be reflected on the pages of Cultural Studies, dedicated to photographs for April 08-14 from National Geographic.

In the Sierro Madre mountains, Mexico, there is an extraordinary park of surreal sculptures Las Pozas, the brainchild of the outrageous English millionaire Edward James. He came to Mexico in search of his favorite orchids, fell in love with the local landscapes and stayed here to live here, simultaneously equipping the park. It took him about 40 years to do this.

In search of food, especially in winter, owls can travel long distances, arriving from southern Canada to the Minnesota lakes. On the northern shore of Lake Superior, south of Two Harbors, the photographer managed to shoot one of these predators at the most crucial moment, when she almost overtook her little prey.

The magical red night caught the photographer on the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin, New Zealand. The Milky Way with myriads of stars, the clearest sky dotted with fireflies, is an amazing picture created by nature, which cannot be seen by those who are never outside the city.

In this high-altitude, barren valley, called the Little Pamir, people survive solely on their livestock. Kyrgyz girls, dressed in red robes, work every day in the sheep pen: you need to feed the animals and milk, and also to collect the manure, which is dried in these parts and used as fuel. Sheep, along with goats, yaks and camels, are called breadwinners here: they provide the inhabitants with milk, meat, wool, and even serve as currency: for one lamb they give 110 pounds of flour.

Winter sometimes brings us surprises, but some of them can only be noticed by people with a subtle and creative mental organization. For example, the original patterns and drawings that the winter frost left in a puddle was seen by a photographer in one of the Swedish villages.
14th of April
A beautiful sunset, beautiful birds, a beautiful city on the horizon. This is how the evening looks for those who walk along the embankment of the Vltava River in Prague, admire the swans and the setting sun.
