Video: Paper sawn from wood. Sculptures by Randall Rosenthal
2024 Author: Richard Flannagan | [email protected]. Last modified: 2023-12-15 23:55
With a quick glance at the works of Randall Rosenthal, it is difficult to notice anything unusual about them. Newspapers, paper money, notepads, maps, diaries … It's hard to believe, but in fact there is not a single gram of paper in them: all these are sculptures that the author saws out of a solid piece of wood and then paints by hand.
When you know what Rosenthal's sculptures really are, then, of course, you immediately begin to look closely at them in search of confirmation of their "wooden" origin. And it is quite easy to find: on the pages of notebooks and books, you can see both the texture of the wood and the growth rings. But if you do not know the history of the sculptures, then the same rings may well be mistaken for some kind of paper defects, so harmoniously they fit into the overall appearance of the sculpture.
“It seems to me that people don't pay any attention to details,” Randall Rosenthal shares his observations. “When they look at an object, they say,“This is a book,”or a magazine, or something else. But what really matters to me is that I don't even try to hide the fact that all my work is made of wood. Interestingly, even Randall's wife once confused her own notebook with her husband's carved wooden copy.
Randall Rosenthal was born in New York in 1947. He began his creative career as an artist, painting paintings in the spirit of surrealism, in the early 90s the author switched to creating wall architectural sculptures, and already with the arrival of the 21st century he decided to start carving books, newspapers and other "paper" things from wood. What Randall has managed to create over the past decade can be seen by visiting his website.

Paper tricks. A series of paper sculptures by Vincent Tomczyk
In the studio of the American artist Vincent Tomczyk, you should be extremely careful. Do not touch the things you like, do not take books in your hands, do not sit on chairs and benches, because the next minute all this can break and fall apart right in front of your eyes. Still, paper is a very fragile material, especially if you don't know how to handle it. Wood Art: Mathematical Wood Harmony Cha Jong-Rye
Wood art is a trend that was in vogue back in the era of stone axes. Wood still remains an indispensable material for works of art - and even such non-standard ones as living wooden sculpture. But when working with already sawn wood, not every artist will be able to fully use the natural wood texture, its rings and fibers. The way the Korean sculptor Cha Jong-Rye does it

Dream collages or collages-dreams of the artist Eleanor Wood (Eleanor Wood)
When we sleep, we always dream of something, or almost always. And our dreams are most often a reflection of our reality, or dreams. And so the artist Eleanor Wood decided to fantasize what ordinary people, young and old, dream about in their dreams and presented the audience with a series of "dreamy" collages
Fauna in a tree trunk. Wood sculptures by Randall D Boni
Wood is a wonderful natural material in which the ideas of many artists are realized. From wood, you can create a whole house and the entire home interior, from furniture to kitchen utensils, wood can give life to beautiful proud horses, from wood the hands of the master can make a real bus, which is in no way inferior to the iron brother. Sculptor and artist Randall D Boni uses wood not only as a creative material, but also as a frame
