An exhibition by American photographer Aaron Rose reveals a hot summer weekend in 1960s New Yorkers trying to escape the unbearable heat on the crowded beaches of Coney Island.
This is how Arthur Miller described the stifling heat of the New York summer in his 1998 essay "Before Air-Conditioning." Not surprisingly, the townspeople often huddled in motley flocks on Coney Island in search of a breath of fresh air in the middle of the vast, humid and hot crowd.
"As for Coney Island over the weekend," Miller continued, "every stretch of the beach was so crowded that it was almost impossible to find a place to sit down or put a book or hot dog."
On the eve of the new summer, the exhibition of photographs by Aaron Rose opens at The Museum of the City of New York "In a World of Their Own: Coney Island Photographs "). The photographer captured on film scenes from the life of the summer Coney Island of the 1960s - a period when the beach invariably became a Mecca for exhausted residents year after year, deprived of the opportunity to find comfort under a stream of cool air from an air conditioner.
Another project for which “summer”, “New York” and “beach” are keywords is Emily Stein's “Bubblegum”.
