Video: Typefaces from Typefaces: Office Typography in Fold Yard by Benoit Challand

French 3D artist and illustrator Benoit Challan likes to take a break from commissions for Ogilvy, Nike and Cartier from time to time and play with fonts. The task that he set for himself in the last such project is relevant for many in-house designers - to spur the creativity and team spirit of employees in a boring office environment.
But instead of arranging multi-colored ottomans in the corners or replacing all the participants in corporate meetings on bar stools, he decided to start redesigning workplaces.
The concept, which is not the most euphonious for the Russian ear, the name "Animal Farm" ("Fold Yard") turns the outlines of the letters of the English alphabet into 26 different jobs. Each section is made of wood. The neutral color scheme is diluted with black accents: a mobile filing cabinet under the table top or slightly to the side, table legs, book holders and chairs.
Of course, some letters are much easier to adapt to a real workspace. For example, "D" is easy to read in an ergonomic crescent-shaped tabletop, while "L" is the most common office desk with the letter "L". In some cases, the "letter" is for two or more workers (like "O" or "Y"), which can be convenient when working on joint projects. However, the reasonableness of the organization of space in some sections raises a number of questions. Probably, they will be given to interns.
“Typography converted into functional furniture celebrates the beauty of large print. The letterforms are recognizable and form words and phrases only if you look at them from above,”comments Shallan. Whether it is worth investing an indefinite amount of money in creating furniture, whose main task is to compose messages that hardly anyone will ever be able to read, is a moot point. Nevertheless, the execution of the project is well-deserved admiration of the public. The tiny models include many nice details such as books, keyboards, magazine and brochure photos, and monitor desks.
Shallan's project has not gone beyond concept and visualization yet, and, most likely, it should not have, so the "woodiness" of this font is very conditional. But the Dutch designer Monique Goossens twists letters from real human hair.
