What do people do when they retire? They continue to work, travel, move in with their children and babysit their grandchildren, devote themselves to taking care of their own health or garden, embroider or knit … And an Italian pensioner Ciro Califano discovered a creative gift in himself, and for a long time and successfully engaged in the construction of architectural sculptures from wine corks. His collection includes cork palaces, towers, skyscrapers - and Colosseum in miniature … Strictly speaking, Ciro Califano has long dreamed of devoting himself to creativity, or at least carving out a little time to do this business on a regular basis. But all his life he had to work at the post office, travel around Italy and live on the road in the literal sense of the word. However, sooner or later, dreams come true, and for several years now, the 62-year-old Italian has been transforming wine bottle corks into graceful structures. Among which the central place is, of course, the majestic Colosseum.
Before starting work on the sculpture, Ciro Califano carefully studies the architecture of the object, reads a lot about it in books and magazines, draws sketches, and sometimes glues paper models. It took the sculptor two years of time and about 10 thousand wine bottle corks to complete the sculpture of the Colosseum. Of course, a pensioner alone would not have drunk so much alcohol, and in such a short time. Fortunately, his son owns a restaurant in the city of Nocera, and it was he who provided his father with the material necessary for work. By the way, the art studio of Ciro Califano is located in the premises directly inside the restaurant, which entertains visitors who can watch the work of the master, and also attracts new clients from the category of fans of contemporary art to the institution.
In addition to the miniature sculpture of the Colosseum, Ciro Califano built from wine corks the Roman aqueduct in Nimes, the Saracen Tower, the Monte Albino Church and other famous masterpieces of world architecture.

Believe it or not, what you will see now are not color photographs at all, as it might seem at first glance, but stunning watercolors by the American self-taught artist Eric Christensen. Looking at his work, you understand more than ever that there is no limit to human capabilities. Nevertheless, art critics are not always supportive of the work of this master, considering him to be just a “redrawer”. What do you think?

Portraits of women made of wine corks: the work of Scott Gundersen

City mini-sculpture. US streets in miniature
I remember that every little girl wanted her to have a Barbie doll, a petite fashionable girl, her boyfriend Ken, a petite stylish guy, and to them - a real palace with a lot of rooms, in which everything is exactly the same as in life. Only small. Urban sculptures, which have been making for many years by the American artist Alan Wolfson, are somewhat reminiscent of doll houses. Only they are much more realistic - from a doorknob to an ashtray for a hundred
