Several Russian films were shown at the 23rd Shanghai International Film Festival. The program also included the war drama "Rzhev" directed by Igor Kopylov. The excitement around the film was great - tickets for all five sessions of the film were sold out even before the opening of the festival.
The film "Rzhev" was created on the basis of the story of the front-line writer Vyacheslav Kondratyev and tells about the tragic events of the Great Patriotic War, which are called the "Rzhev massacre". This is the story of keeping one village, the timing of events fits in just one day, but reveals the inner essence of all the characters in the picture. Their completely dissimilar fates by fatal coincidence intersect on the front line. The director made an attempt to rethink human feelings, the disclosure of which is catalyzed by war and the fear of death.
The filming was initiated by the Russian businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin: on the eve of the 75th anniversary of the Victory, he decided to honor the memory of his grandfather, who fought near Rzhev. Note that the picture was the first attempt by filmmakers to perpetuate the feat of the Rzhev heroes. According to historians, the events that took place here from 1942 to 1943 were largely underestimated. At the same time, it was they who exhausted the forces of the Germans, allowing the Soviet army to carry out the main blow at Stalingrad.
At the end of 2019, Rzhev was a success in the country's cinemas, and in May, before Victory Day, the film was shown on the Rossiya TV channel. Also, the tape was shown to residents of the Moscow region all summer at improvised car cinemas.
The picture turned out to be intimate and dynamic at the same time; it collected flattering comments from both ordinary viewers and professionals. “For me, as for someone who saw this war,“Rzhev”is a deep and serious film. It is made at a very high level. The filth of war is magnificently shown, without any gimmicks. Everything was done very seriously”, - the honored worker of culture and stuntman Alexander Massarsky shared his opinion.
Chinese viewers also did not remain indifferent to the Russian film. Many noted the quality of the filming and the deep semantic load of the tape: “This film allowed me to better understand the level of filmmaking in Russia. In terms of the quality of filming, this is an excellent film, the footage of the battle is truly amazing. In fact, this film is not only about battles, about the battle itself, it contains a lot of reflections on the spirit of people, on their light and dark sides, which made the picture very deep. " The Shanghai International Film Festival is one of the largest in the country. The first time the event took place 27 years ago. Until 2001, the festival was held every two years, but with the increase in its popularity, it was made annual. In 2003, the festival was canceled due to the SARS epidemic. In 2020, due to the threat of the spread of the coronavirus, the organizers decided to reduce the occupancy of cinema halls by up to 30%. In addition to "Rzhev", the audience was presented with 4 more Russian films: "Ogonyok-Ognivo", "Katya and Vasya go to school", "One breath", "Sheep and wolves: a pig's move".
