Over the centuries-old history of the visual arts, there are many directions, styles and types that artists have resorted to in their creative pursuits. And today I would like to touch on the most monumental and large-scale, namely, the murals that arose at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries and received their rebirth in our time. Contemporary artists around the world are increasingly adopting it and creating works that delight city dwellers and tourists. Among such - Antonio Segura Donat, Spanish street illustrator who creates incredible murals of fantastic flora and fauna.
A bit of the history of muralism
Mural art is a modern street art that first made itself known in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was at that time that murals quickly entered the life of many cities in the world. And the basis, as you may have guessed, for this type of creativity began to serve as the outer walls of multi-storey buildings. As a rule, a mural is a large-scale artistic work of art, which, in addition to a beautiful picture, is designed to convey some kind of deep idea or meaning. Therefore, these images have much in common with classical frescoes, which in ancient times depicted various scenes from life or mythology.
And finally, I would like to say that, unlike their street art "brother" - graffiti - murals are an official and legal form of art, since the local government gives an official permission to artists to perform works on the walls of city houses.
Pop Surrealism by Antonio Segura Donata
Spanish street artist Antonio Segura Donat, working under the pseudonym Dulk, became interested in painting walls at the age of 19. Antonio "has always been fascinated by encyclopedias of ancient nature and books with botanical and zoological illustrations." This passion has survived to this day, it is it that allows the artist to create delightful murals, inspired by flora and wildlife.
The main place of residence and work of the artist is still Valencia, stretching along the Mediterranean coast.
It is there that he creates his unique art. However, Antonio travels all over the world for inspiration and impressions. Once, having decided to go to those lands where the characters of his works live in order to collect more information about these animals, the artist has become attached to the African savannah. Since then, he has wandered around Tanzania, Costa Rica and Yellowstone National Park with a camera in his hand - to "use all these memories to add special value to my work."
He also participates in many international graphic design competitions, where he was named the winner more than once. His works adorn the walls of streets in Barcelona, Valencia, Copenhagen, Malaga, Munich, New Jersey, Manchester, Bologna and many other cities in Europe and America.
His style of work is a mixture of whimsical imagery, burlesque and fantasy, giving this whole artistic mix a bright shade of pop surrealism.
In addition to murals, the young, ambitious Spanish illustrator and graphic designer illustrates books, creates covers for music albums in the same pop-surrealist style and sculpts exclusive toys.

Eye to eye: a photography project from Rankin
The importance and expressiveness of the human gaze has always been highly appreciated: a person's face can be absolutely impenetrable, but once you look into his eyes, everything becomes clear. But how often, meeting someone's gaze, do we pay attention not to the feelings conveyed to them, but to the beauty of the eye itself? Unlikely. But there is something to see. Perhaps such a familiar expression as “look someone in the eye” will take on a completely new meaning for you after watching the work of the photographer Ranki
