Not sure where to put your old skateboard? Better than throwing it in the trash, give your old and seedy friend Beck Hickey and she'll use him for a good purpose. Back Hickey is a young designer who has launched a new line of skateboard bags and accessories called Sk8bags.
Beck Hickey created her fashion brand Beck (y) in 2003 and devoted herself to the creative craft after she was fired from her job as a waiter. The New York-based designer is developing a collection in which everything is handmade: handbags, belt buckles, wallets, earrings, charms, and even iPod cases. With the Sk8bags collection, Hickey has combined her long-standing love of skateboards with her design talent, resulting in original handcrafted useful pieces.
Back painstakingly works on each accessory, which makes it unique. Each piece is created from a separate board, and since all boards are different, there are no identical accessories created from these oldest skateboards. The creative process is quite laborious and time-consuming. In his New York workshop, the designer uses a drill and other tools on a huge table to cut and join parts of the board, and using a sewing machine, sews fabrics, mostly plush or satin. Her faithful friends helped her with the design of handbags, wallets and other accessories, sharing with her ideas on how this or that article should look so that it is attractive and at the same time convenient. Beck admitted that everything turned out even better than she expected.
Back Hickey's art is functional. By using old, well-worn items along with brand new materials, the designer has discovered that she can create unique, trendy, stylish and visually appealing pieces that are immensely popular with customers.
For every old board she receives, Back Hickey donates $ 3 to organizations that help build and maintain public paved skateboards across the country. A noble cause, however.
