If it were necessary to create papier-mâché dolls for staging the novels of F. Dostoevsky, no one would have coped with this task better Roman Shustry … After all, his dolls convey the spirit of that very "Petersburg" - a gray, cold, mystical city. However, the master prefers to call his creations puppet sculptures - after all, they are much more complicated in design and execution. It is not surprising that the magnificent dolls of Roman Shustrov are among the most beautiful and famous dolls in the world.
“I grew up in St. Petersburg, where gray shabby houses, rusty pipes, cracked asphalt and darkened snow. The city brought up in me a love for just such a gamut … It seems to me that due to the absence of color, the character is more clearly visible,”says the master puppeteer about himself. Indeed, dolls made of papier-mâché by Roman Shustry may seem faded and inexpressive due to the lack of bright colors, but this is the intention of their creator. A glance that is not distracted by a blinding colorful shell is able to see something more - the inner content. The dolls created by Roman Shustrov are, on the one hand, a cast of Petersburg characters, and on the other, a cast of their souls and the "soul" of Petersburg.
Shustrov in his dolls depicts not ordinary people (although he is looking for prototypes among the Petersburg residents), but those who are considered strange: jesters, clowns, circus performers, bird-catchers. He also created a series of angels that are so similar to people and at the same time aspire to the sublime. It is curious that almost all Roman Shustrov dolls are male images. The master himself admits that it is easier for him to feel them. In addition, the male image seems to be the most harmonious for the “male” city of St. Petersburg. So, one of the angels is called "Petersburg", and he is depicted in the form of a pretty old man.
Making a papier-mâché doll is a painstaking and lengthy process. It is interesting that when choosing newspapers for future dolls, the master throws out all the bad news so that only positive energy emanates from the doll. Roman Shustrov's dolls, like, for example, collectible dolls by Zemfira Dziova, are a true work of art.
By the way, in addition to creating dolls, Roman Shustrov draws and decorates the interiors of the cafe. It is there, as well as among collectors from all over the world, that these real Petersburgers from papier-mâché live.
