It is generally accepted that glossy fashion magazines are light and not burdened with special content. On their pages you can see pictures from a beautiful life, but not mention of serious social problems or disasters. Italian Vogue has shattered this stereotype: The Water & Oil photo shoot by renowned photographer Steven Meisel focuses on the explosion of an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico.
Steven Meisel's photo session is not at all what we are used to seeing in glossy magazines. The author wanted to show the consequences of an ecological disaster, so in his photographs the model depicts the suffering of birds and fish forced to live in oil-polluted water. The photographer chose 45-year-old Kristen McMenamy as a model.
Meisel's photographs are often called "disgusting", "devoid of beauty" and generally "not art." But is it possible to show a catastrophe beautifully? And is it really necessary? After all, the author's goal is not to cause delight and admiration of the public, but to show the suffering and the extent of the disaster. Do people disgust to look at a dying girl in a dress of feathers smeared with mud? Who knows if they themselves will not be in its place as a result of another accident. Only this will already be real life, and not shooting for gloss.
The accident at the Deepwater Horizon oil platform occurred on April 22, 2010, and the leak was stopped only in July. During this time, a huge amount of oil poured into the ocean, which had an extremely negative impact on the ecology of the Gulf of Mexico.
