At a cursory glance, you might think that the works of David Johnson depict flowers drawn by the artist in a graphic editor. But if you take a closer look, it becomes clear that in fact these are photographs, and the amazing flowers on them are nothing more than fireworks scattering across the night sky.

While documenting the preparation of participants for the International Fireworks Show in Ottawa, Canada, photographer David Johnson noticed that all the pictures of the fireworks are similar to one another. Therefore, at one of the next performances of pyrotechnics, the photographer decided to try to move away from the standard documentary photographs of fireworks, adding to them the author's artistic touch.

The photographer did not resort to the capabilities of a graphic editor, as it might seem at first glance, but used the knowledge from the "fundamentals of photography". Each shot was taken with a shutter speed of about two seconds. When the author heard a rocket being fired, he gradually changed focus from "macro" to "infinity", observing how the blurry streaks were concentrated at one point.

Photo lovers have dubbed Johnson's work "heavenly flowers", but the author believes that the fireworks in his photographs are more like anemones (coral polyps).

David Johnson says he had no idea what effect to expect from focus manipulation before. Because I have not seen pictures of fireworks made in such a technique before.

Long exposure night photography is complicated by the glare from any luminous objects, even the fading light of the previous fireworks can spoil the idea. Therefore, using a similar shooting technique, it is important to guess at what point in the night sky the next fiery flower will begin to grow, and this is not an easy task. Nevertheless, David Johnson managed to create rare fireworks that delight with their novelty.
