Probably, if the resident of Great Britain Rebecca J. Coles did not become an artist, she would certainly choose the profession of entomologist. For several years now, Coles has been passionate about creating charming colorful compositions from paper butterflies.
“The moment of transforming absolutely flat sheets of paper into three-dimensional decorative forms never ceases to amuse me,” says the artist. Rebecca calls her creative process nothing more than "a journey with a pencil, paper and scissors."
There are many hours of painstaking work behind each such paper composition. First, on paper that would otherwise go to the landfill, the artist manually applies silhouettes of butterflies, which she then carefully carves out with especially sharp scissors. “My goal,” says Rebecca, “is to make everyday objects something incredible, which would allow the viewer to appreciate the possibilities of the simplest materials.”
In 2000, the artist received a bachelor's degree in art and design from the Winchester School of Art, and in 2002 - a master's degree in textiles from the Royal College of Art, London. The artist currently lives and works in the UK. Her exhibition activities are scheduled for several months in advance. So, in mid-May, her work can be seen at the Spirit of summer fair, which will be held in London.
Coles' colleague and namesake, artist and sculptor Rebecca Louise Law, also strives to make the world a better place. For seventeen years, Law has been creating stunning flower arrangements that become a real decoration of any space, whether it be an art gallery, or a private residence.
