Sometimes tourists turn out to be much more interesting than the sights near which they are grouped. Of course, this does not apply to such tourist giants as the Louvre, Versailles, the Grand Arch of La Defense or the Eiffel Tower. But in the vicinity of these particular objects of photography Peter Otto collected material for a series of his pictures with the title Tourist Places.

Tourists love to take pictures. Moreover, many of them do not even take their eyes off the viewfinder or camera screen when they find themselves in some interesting place - they see the world precisely through the prism of their favorite camera. Tourists take pictures of everything and everyone. They especially like to photograph themselves or their companions against the background of a particular attraction, or even just like that. But photographer Peter Otto loves to photograph tourists. More precisely, he loves to photograph photographing tourists.

After all, tourists with cameras are an integral part of the surroundings of any more or less interesting sight in the world. Sometimes there are so many of them that they become an attraction in themselves. Someone likes it, but someone comes running to the Louvre from the very early morning, to the very opening of this museum, to see Gioconda without the crowd of tourists from all over the world photographing it. And someone, like Stephen Alvarez, generally descends into the dungeon, where you can hardly meet people.

Peter Otto is not a misanthrope. He comes to tourist places during the busiest times. After all, he loves not so much interesting objects as people photographing them. For by the way a person shoots something, you can learn a lot about this person, as well as about his companions.

It is these attempts to study human psychology, human history through human behavior during photography that Peter Otto studies. And the result of these years of creative research was a series of images of "Tourist Places" taken in some of the most crowded, most visited places in Paris, where Peter Otto now lives.
