Cyber technologies will help save the ancient heritage from the Islamic State. This was reported by BBC News reporters after talking with engineers Chance Kaunur and Matthew Vincent, who figured out exactly how to save the artifacts. The idea came to the engineers immediately after IS destroyed the monuments of Mosul and Nineveh in mid-February this year.
The virtual restoration project is called the Mosul Project. The idea of the project is to recreate all the monuments as a 3D image based on the preserved photographs. At the moment, 9 volunteers are already taking part in the event, and they managed to create exact copies of 15 monuments in 3D in a few months. To do this, they used 700 photographs that were taken in different years. Pictures are sent by volunteers, as well as universities. In addition to them, scientists use video recordings. The biggest problem and the biggest regret of the team is that now it will never be possible to find out how plausible the copies were made. Nevertheless, the engineers are confident that the demonstration in 3D is a completely different level of perception of the presented material. It is not yet possible to use the restoration project in serious scientific work, however, in the future, it will be possible to use it to capture the still-preserved monuments.
