Ashley V. Blalock Is a talented craftswoman from California who became famous for her knitted installations. Needlewoman creates huge napkins made of red yarnthat hangs on the walls of the exhibition halls. The collection of lace products is constantly growing, the project was named “Keeping Up Appearances”, which literally means “Keeping the appearance”.
Ashley Blalock's laces are striking, first of all, for their gigantic size: some of them reach 15 feet in height. Installations are placed from floor to ceiling, the feeling that lace is seeping from the walls and encompasses the entire space of the rooms. The talented American artist views her work as a symbiosis of craft and visual arts.
Ashley Blalock emphasizes that knitted napkins have long been one of the most common home decorations. Thanks to lace, the hostesses, in her opinion, create the illusion of warmth, comfort and tranquility. The napkins that Ashley Blalock knits herself are perceived by the audience in a completely different way. The artist is against ostentatiousness, which is why she chose such a bright color of yarn, and the kaleidoscope of abstract patterns does not at all look delicate. Rather, this installation is a call to look at the world in a new way, not creating the appearance of well-being, but creating a new reality with our own hands.
More photos of this wonderful installation, as well as other equally striking works of the needlewoman, can be seen on Ashley Blalock's personal website.
