Danish artist and designer Roeland Otten believes that it is necessary to fight the lurid incidents of urban development on their own. Using mosaics, prints or photographs, he turns ugly buildings into original art objects.
In order to "hide" the unaesthetic structure from the eyes of passers-by, Otten covers it with a mosaic or photographic image of a fragment of the landscape that could have been seen if it had not been for this structure at all. True, mosaic "reflections" created by the designer within the project Air Quality Measuring Station, is more of an "eight-bit" version of the cityscape.
Another Otten project, Dazzle Painted Electricity Substation, aims to "fight" the ugly transformer booths in Rotterdam. Otten achieves a whimsical illusionist effect with a huge print that covers the booth. Instead of spoiling the view of the beautiful city street, the booth becomes part of its modernist design.
Otten's activity is caused not only by the desire to advertise his own design talents, but also by the patriotic feelings of the artist. He wants to "restore in its original form the most beautiful historical corners of Rotterdam, the appearance of which was hopelessly spoiled due to industrial necessity."
Otten coincides with many contemporary artists in that he finds inspiration not so much in the bosom of virgin nature, as in urban architecture. An increasing number of painters are now turning to the genre of the urban landscape - one can recall the British photographer Josh Adamski and Asian painter Ng Woon Lam … Otten, however, not only admires the beauty of his native Rotterdam - but also seeks to save and enhance it on his own: a worthy role model.
